Is Royal Wedding Fever hitting Canterbury?
With the Royal Wedding just one day away, Kent24 has been out onto the streets of Canterbury to see if people are excited about the big day, and find out how they’ll be celebrating it.
As the April 29 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton gets ever closer, preparations are being made for the celebration of the event. Families will be gathering to spend time together and witness the marriage, and street parties will be held up and down the country.
Here in Kent, we have been named as the county which will be holding more official street parties than any other, with 54 given the go ahead by the council, over 20 more than second placed Cambridgeshire, with 32.
According to a spokesman for Kent County Council, “Kent residents will now host at least 60 parties to mark the wedding.”
On the streets of Canterbury, however, not everyone was fully excited about the event, and many said they were doing very little to celebrate it. One resident was unsure about the marriage, and said: “Marriage is a very sacred thing. If these two are getting married, hopefully they love each other and it’s not a political event.”
However some were still looking forward to the event. One student spoke of using a “Will and Kate mug to have a proper English cup of tea on Friday morning” before moving on to “Will and Kate champagne” later on in the day.
To follow the events of the Royal Wedding on the day, Friday 29 April 2011, the BBC News website will be providing coverage from 6am onwards, with dedicated coverage on BBC One beginning at 8am and continuing throughout the day.
