Canterbury sways away from AV vote...
With the upcoming referendum on voting here in the UK just a couple of weeks away, we've been into Canterbury to find out the opinions of the public.
The vote will be between the First Past the Post system and the Alternative Vote system. It is an issue that has split many members in each parties, and has also created some unlikely alliances between different political figures.
In an interesting turn of events, it would seem that the general opinion here in Kent is against a change to the Alternative Vote system, with the majority of people asked - 42% - saying they would vote 'No' on the referendum.
When asked as to why they would be voting 'No', one said: "I don't think AV will actually change anything. It's not what anyone actually wants - it's a halfway house, and will just be more expensive."
It may not be all dead and buried for the 'Yes' campaign though, as 32% of the people asked still said they were still behind it. Journalist and University Lecturer Gary Wright, 48, from Ashford, is behind the change. He said: "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Here in Kent, we've got 18 Tory MPs - how can they be used to represent all of the people - the system can be fairer. Some parties use AV to elect their members and I think we should too."
The referendum will take place on May 5 2011.

...Parties use AV to pick their members? I am a member of the Conservatives and never had to win an election. ..Maybe he meant to pick it's mps? But no, that is FPTP..hmm
I am guessing he meant leaders, but that is only half right.
AV WAS used to pick Ed Miliband over David Miliband...it was also used to pick Nick Clegg...other than that all parties have other ways that don't result in the wrong people being elected.
I'm afraid there was some miscommunication when I took that quote down, I've now changed it. Thanks for your opinion.
